Kelly Rinehart, Health Care Risk Management Expert, TeamSTEPPS Master Trainer

Kelly specializes in providing customized services for health care providers and organizations, with a focus on clinical risk management, culture training, lean health care coaching, disclosure of adverse event training, root cause analysis, and the evaluation and design of risk management and patient safety programs. She has consistently worked directly with physicians, nurses, administrators and other medical staff, in both the acute care and ambulatory setting, to improve patient safety and increase efficiency. Her work has consisted of comprehensive risk assessments to determine process improvement opportunities, coaching and team building, and developing and implementing safety tools into the workplace.

Kelly created and implements the Lean Transformations program to hospitals and clinics for process improvement, patient safety, efficiency, cost savings and patient and staff satisfaction. As the Quality Project Coordinator for the Oregon Association of Hospitals and Health Systems, Kelly designed and piloted the Lean Transformation Collaborative for 5 rural and critical access hospitals in Oregon. She is continuing the program with a new cohort of hospitals every year.

Kelly served as the co-director for a surgical collaborative of 15 Oregon hospitals. She was instrumental in developing patient safety tools (e.g. venous thrombolytic event assessment and prophylaxis tool) to assist hospitals with the CMS Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP) measures. She also led the way for hospitals to obtain communication and team training.

As a popular speaker for physicians and medical staff alike, Kelly has conducted Patient Safety Workshops for physicians in Oregon, Idaho and Washington discussing issues such as Patient Handoffs, Disclosure of Adverse Events and Claims Review Analysis. Her repertoire of presentations is extensive and informative.

Kelly has also worked for a major medical malpractice insurance company as a risk management intervention specialist. The position involved working one on one with physicians who had experienced particularly difficult adverse events. During this time, she developed risk management and peer review programs for medical practices. Kelly has a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Regents College in Albany, N.Y., a Bachelor of Science in Biology/Zoology from Humboldt State University in Arcata, CA, is certified as a TeamSTEPPS Master Trainer and has many other health care certifications and affiliations.
