What is LifeWings?
LifeWings is a program
to save patient lives and reduce healthcare
costs with the use of proven aviation Hardwired Safety ToolsSM. These tools include 1) leadership
development training, 2) teamwork training
3) hardwired aviation safety practices such
as standard procedures and checklists to
avoid over-reliance on memory, 4)
measurement programs to prove results and
determine ROI, and 5) lifetime results
through our Master Trainer program.
LifeWings is the result of the publication
of a report by the Institute of Medicine in
2000 that highlighted the need for better
training in the medical field to reduce
preventable medical error and fatalities.
The report estimates that there are
somewhere between 44,000 and 98,000
preventable deaths in the United States
annually due to preventable error. These
published findings have led many health care
organizations to pursue training designed to
improve team skills, improve performance and
reduce risk of negative patient outcomes,
using the success of the aviation model
heralded by the Institute of Medicine and
Institute of Healthcare Improvement.
LifeWings is proven, practical, effective
program designed by professional aviators,
adapted for healthcare by physicians and
nurses with scores of years of experience,
to reduce preventable error based on
aviation's best practices.

What is the
aviation model?
In the late 1980s, aviation industry
experts and researchers realized that the
primary "root cause" of commercial airline
crashes was not because of the technical
incompetence of pilots and crews, or
mechanical failure. Seventy to eighty
percent of fatal accidents were due to
teamwork failures among the crew. And
although new technology in aircraft cockpits
seemed to help, each new piece of technology
initiated a new source of human error.
In response to this realization, federal
regulators required commercial air carriers
to institute team training (called Crew
Resource Management or CRM) for airline
pilots and crews. This training prepared
pilots and crew to be a resource for one
another to catch each other's slips and
mistakes before they became serious errors
that led to an accident or incident.
CRM training was so successful that both
military and commercial aviation
organizations have seen dramatic decreases
in accident rates.
Has this model
really been successful?
Yes! Nothing
illustrates this better than this graphic
from the President of G.E. Medical Systems,
Robert Galvin, MD. It compares the number of
defects per million opportunities in
aviation versus healthcare

I know that my
organization wants to do this sort of
program. If I don't choose LifeWings,
what should I look for in a training
partner?
First and foremost, you
should choose a training provider that has
years of real, practical experience in
aviation and aviation safety practices.
Someone who has actually used the aviation
Hardwired Safety ToolsSM cited by the IOM and IHI.
Someone that knows what really works and
what doesn't. Don't waste your valuable
training time and dollars on unproven
theory, “train and leave” seminars or
instructors who haven't "been there, done
that."
Can I attend one

like?
Absolutely. We welcome
visitors to our training. If you have chosen
