Patient Safety Improvement Grants
Resources For Gaining Alternative Funding For
Your Hospital's
Patient Safety Program
Frequently healthcare leaders we meet express their desire
to implement the
LifeWings Patient Safety Improvement Program at
their facility, but in today's resource strapped environment they have
difficulty locating funding. Even though our programs are
proven to provide a return-on-investment for
our
clients, we realize securing funds today can be
challenging. To assist our potential clients we present this list of
resources. The list is not exhaustive and we may know of another
avenue open to your specific type of facility, so if you are interested in
applying for alternative funding for your hospital's patient safety program,
please contact us.
Where Do You Begin?
- Start with a critical
proposition. Why is improving patient safety or
nurse retention good for the
funding source(s)? How will reducing
medical errors at your facility help them meet their
overall mission?
- Assign a qualified point person
and support team to for grant opportunity evaluation and
preparation.
- Choose your funding resources
carefully. The websites below are a good start but also check with
your state and local governments, nearby universities, and
professional organizations in which your staff members belong. Organizations with goals that are closely aligned with yours
present the best use of your precious resources.
- Request an interview with the
funding source.
- Evaluate your competition. How will you make the funding source be able to boast
about the effects of its grants?
- Map out a timeframe and task list
for completing the application process.
In the application:
- Link your problem and solution
explicitly. For example "We think we can decrease medical errors by
implementing standardized communication protocols in our nursing
department."
- Clearly state short (what you
will achieve during the grant process) and long-term goals (what you
will achieve after the funding).
- List specific ways in which you
you will monitor and measure the results of your efforts.
- Demonstrate how the training you
are requesting has accomplished similar goals for other entities -
or how the methodology has been proven to work.
