Patient Safety Organization (PSO) Collaboration

Measure and Monitor Your Success
From Our Programs With The Addition Of Critical Data Management From An AHRQ
Designated PSO
The
AHRQ Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Act of 2005
authorized the creation of
Patient Safety Organizations
(PSOs) to provide a secure environment in which clinicians and health
care organizations can collect, aggregate, and analyze data that enable the
identification and reduction of risks and hazards associated with patient care.
Similar to NASA’s Aviation Safety Reporting System (ASRS), PSOs allow for
voluntary participation of standardized and confidential reporting and analysis
of data on adverse medical events, without the fear of legal discovery.
To help clients fully leverage the improvements they receive by implementing
LifeWings programs, we are collaborating with Tennessee based
Human Performance Technology Group
(HPTG).
HPTG offers a proven communication and data analysis application system called
the Event Communicator that establishes a basic communication loop within
the organization. As an anonymous system, the Event Communicator enhances
the learning culture within the organization. HPTG (PSO#3) offers the
Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality
(AHRQ) common formats for data collection. The common format modules capture,
analyze, share, and manage hospital-wide patient safety data from multiple
hospitals in a standardized format and with a primary focus on learning,
aggregating, and building knowledge.
LifeWings clients have been achieving measurable results with our programs since
2001. Utilizing proven aviation based methodologies and communications tools our
clients have seen error rates reduced ten-fold, observed mortality rates cut by
43%, and surgical count errors decreased by 50%. By offering an enhanced method
of data management and a new valuable resource via HPTG, our clients can
experience even greater improvements in the long-term enabled by:
-
A private, web-based data collection and analysis tool.
-
Enhanced and more immediate communication between caregivers and management.
-
Mapping of current systems to an intelligent data management process.
-
A culture change from "reporting" data to "communicating" data.
-
A new resource of information from peer facilities.
-
A significant tool for continuous improvement without a large capital
expense.
